DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special two-day program bringing together artists\, scholars\, spiritual leaders\, and community voices to explore the sacred images of New Mexican santeros that form the heart of the collection cared for by the FAC. This program is free and open to the public. \nKeynote:\nClaire Farago\, Professor Emerita\, University of Colorado Boulder \nWho owns the past? From the mid-eighteenth century\, in addition to importing religious art from Mexico\, New Mexico produced its own altarpieces and individual devotional panels depicting Christ\, the Virgin\, and saints. The distinctiveness of New Mexican Christian art raises questions central to the social construction of meaning. The process of trying to account for cultural identity in a heterogeneous colonial society also raises issues of power and interpretative privilege. For the sacred is a contested category. No one needs reminders in today’s world of contentious religious fundamentalisms that one person’s sacred is another’s taboo. This talk articulates what is at stake regarding the contested interpretation of sacred objects through a case study of historical New Mexican Christian religious images. Studying the New Mexican material has led
me to consider cultural identity in a very basic way: how people
manipulate whatever material culture is available in their environment

DESCRIPTION:David Mamet’s Oleanna is an uncomfortably relevant play exploring gender\, authority\, power\, and education through a series of increasingly fraught conversations between a university professor and his student. Written in 1992 in response to the Anita Hill–Clarence Thomas hearings\, the play examines what happens when assumptions\, personal biases\, and failures of communication turn differences into divisions. The production invites audiences to reflect on their own perspectives and continue the conversation with openness and respect. \nJoin us on Thursday\, Oct. 1\, from 5–6:30 p.m. for a talkback and reception following that day’s 1 p.m. performance. Colorado College President Manya Whitaker will moderate the conversation. Refreshments and light hors d’oeuvres will be served. SUMMARY:The Bones of Tradition: The Many Lives of the Day of the Dead
DESCRIPTION:In 2015\, a James Bond movie introduced millions to a spectacularly staged Día de los Muertos parade in Mexico City. Two years later\, the Pixar movie Coco depicted some of the rituals associated with the Day of the Dead. But did you know that the Mexico City parade didn’t exist until the filmmakers created it? Or that Disney\, in anticipation of Coco’s release\, filed an application to trademark the phrase “Día de los Muertos” to sell merchandise? What does the actual observance look like\, and has it always looked that way? Through a series of images\, this lecture travels across Mexico to uncover the many regional traditions behind one of the world’s most recognizable commemorations.
