In the Sacred Halls of the Fine Arts Center

June 13, 2025 @ 5:30 pm

Alice Bemis Taylor’s fascination with Hispanic and Indigenous art culminated in the Taylor Collection and the construction of the Fine Arts Center. Why, then, were some professors and a prominent art historian worried that “the sacred halls of the Fine Arts Center” would not be “ready for a Chicano art show” during the 1970s? Take an intriguing journey through the Fine Art Center’s collection. Uncover the nuances among terms including “Hispanic,” “Mexican American,” “Chicano,” and “Mestizo.” Learn how these distinctions enrich your experience of the collection and reveal the significance of the architectural design of the Fine Arts Center building itself.

This lecture coincides with the reinstallation of the FAC permanent collection in fall 2025.

Lecturers: José Antonio Arellano, Associate Professor of English, United States Air Force Academy
