COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 26, 2021) — The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College (FAC) is pleased to present “Ronny Quevedo: at the line,” on view October 1–December 5, 2021.
Quevedo’s first solo exhibition in Colorado presents a selection of recent work that explores the formation of individual identity shaped by a fractured past. The works on view make use of diverse schematics—including dressmakers’ pattern sheets, geographical maps, playing field diagrams, and architectural plans and employ materials such as gold leaf, wax, muslin, plastic crates, carbon and pattern paper. Quevedo incorporates these forms and materials to make associations with events and histories from across the Americas to create a constellation of imagery that explores movement, transnational connections, and the formation of diasporic identities.
“Overarching the exhibition is an understanding of multiple origins,” said Quevedo, “I reference personal geographies, various notions of identities, and multiple diasporas to consider the development of individual identity.”
The exhibition includes newly commissioned large-scale works, including a floor installation composed of reclaimed wood sourced from a professional basketball court. The artist selected pieces from the section of the court commonly known as the paint, broke them apart and reconfigured them, then overlaid them with a new diagram. This work is the latest in a series of architectural projects related to historic and contemporary playing fields, including Mesoamerican ball courts, basketball courts, and soccer fields. For the artist, these sites not only make an important connection between cultures that are separated by distance and centuries, but they also honor the sites that provide an opportunity for collective assembly. In this way, the work considers the role of the individual within a larger collective while also reflecting on the rules and inconsistencies that govern labor, movement, and migration.
“We are honored to present Quevedo’s work at the Fine Arts Center Museum,” said curator of contemporary art Katja Rivera. “Quevedo’s compelling works are thoughtfully constructed and bring together a carefully selected arrangement of forms and materials. His work interrogates the formation of linear history by placing seemingly disparate references, places, and sites in conversation with one another through visual form. Given the importance of relation in the artist’s work, this exhibition provides an exceptional opportunity to see so much of his work together in one space.”

The conversation will be moderated by FAC Curator of Contemporary Art Katja Rivera.

ABOUT RONNY QUEVEDO
Ronny Quevedo (b.1981, Guayaquil, Ecuador) work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at The Whitney Museum of American Art; Perez Art Museum Miami; Elizabeth Dee Gallery; The Drawing Center; the Queens Museum; The Bronx Museum of the Arts; and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, amongst others. He is a recipient of the 2017 Blade of Grass Fellowship for Socially Engaged Art and the 2016 Queens Museum/Jerome Foundation Fellowship for Emerging Artists. He has participated in residencies at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Kala Art Institute, the Core Program at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Project Row Houses, Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, and Lower East Side Printshop. He has been published in Hyperallergic and Art Forum. Quevedo received his MFA from the Yale School of Art in 2013 and BFA from The Cooper Union in 2003.
