Informed by Afro-Latinx and Indigenous spiritual practices, the artist Carolina Caycedo and her collaborators reconceptualized several iconic spaces in and around the historic Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in Los Angeles. In the resulting video, brown, Black, and queer bodies move through the grand double staircase of the art gallery, the sweeping sculpture-lined North Vista lawn, and the library’s rare book reading room. In Apariciones/Apparitions the dancers occupy the historic grounds using movements that suggest leisure, labor, and ritual practices.
