Three Fragments of a Lost Tale

June 2, 2018 - September 16, 2018

Sculptor John Frame has lived and worked in Southern California since the early 1980s. In 2006, he began conceptualizing and creating the objects, film, and photographs contained in Three Fragments of a Lost Tale. In keeping with his signature style of finely carved wooden sculpture, Frame has developed an intricately fractured story featuring a cast of unusual characters, each gorgeously rendered, fully articulated figure brought to life through stop-motion photography. The Tale of the Crippled Boy is an ongoing film project that continues to occupy Frame’s studio practice more than a decade after inception.

John Frame is a two time grant recipient from the National Endowment for the Arts, an Individual Artist Fellowship winner from the J. Paul Getty Museum, and holds an Honorary Doctor of Arts from Cornish College of the Arts. His work is part of more than 300 public and private collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Renwick Gallery of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution, and has been exhibited throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia.
