Where the Saint Lives examines works produced in the Southwestern United States and Mexico spanning from the 1800s to the early 2000s that make visible the link between cultural identity and spirituality. The exhibition takes its title from the combined Nahuatl and Spanish word santocalli, which translates to “the saint’s house,” a historical structure found throughout the region used for cross-cultural religious practices. These spaces were home to santos – images of saints that were considered to not just be objects, but beings that were alive–and were sites for both Indigenous and Christian altars, rituals, and prayers.
Using the concept of “home” as a framework, Where the Saint Lives investigates Southwestern identity through the imagery of Nuestra Señora, or Our Lady– the mother of Jesus Christ who has many titles including Our Lady of Guadalupe, who, through her imagery and story, can additionally be interpreted as Tonantzin Coatlaxopeuh, a Nahua goddess. Where the Saint Lives explores the combined Indigenous and Catholic iconography and references found in art produced in the Southwest, and the contemporary interpretations of these intersections. This exhibition asks what it means to be from and inhabit a space that is simultaneously young and old, a place that is emblematic of resilience amongst violence, and wove together by varied cultural ties and perspectives.

Where the Saint Lives investiga las obras producidas en la zona del sudoeste de los Estados Unidos y México en un largo periodo que abarca desde el siglo XIX hasta principios de la década del 2000; y que visibiliza el vínculo entre la identidad cultural y la espiritualidad. La exposición toma su título de la palabra santocalli que combina el náhuatl y el español y significa “la casa del santo”. El santocalli es una estructura histórica que se encuentra en toda la región ya citada y se usa para prácticas religiosas multiculturales. Estos espacios eran el hogar de los santos, los cuales no fueron considerados simplemente objetos sino entidades vivas. Estas estructuras fueron el espacio para los altares, rituales y rezos tanto indígenas como cristianos.
Utilizando el concepto de “hogar” como marco Where the Saint Lives investiga la identidad de la región a través de las imágenes de Nuestra Señora; la madre de Jesucristo y que tiene muchos motes entre los que se encuentra Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, quien, a través de su imaginario e historia puede adicionalmente interpretarse como Tonantzin Coatlaxopeuh, una diosa nahua. Where the Saint Lives muestra la combinación de la iconografía y las referencias indígenas y católicas; así como las interpretaciones contemporáneas de estas intersecciones. Esta exposición cuestiona el significado de ser y habitar un espacio que es simultáneamente joven y antiguo, un lugar que es emblema de la resiliencia entre la violencia y que fue tejida por diversos lazos culturales y perspectivas variadas.
