Meet our Aug/Sept member of the month: Wayan Buschman

FAC member for 2 years

Why did you become a member of the Fine Arts Center?

I became a member of the FAC when I arrived at CC for my freshman year, in the fall of 2016.

When did your interest in the arts begin?

My love for the arts began when I started drawing as a little kid. I’ve loved making art for as long as I can remember, and I find that when you love creating your own art you’re drawn to appreciate the art of others. It’s easy to forget how arduous the artistic process can be when viewing a finished product, so I’ve always tried to get myself to imagine the artist’s process as I make my way through an exhibition. It makes me feel better when I feel stuck making a piece of my own.

What has been one of your favorite plays, classes or exhibits at the Fine Arts Center and why?

I love the exhibition Takaamanohara that features the work of Chiho Aoshima. I was simply excited to see the installations go up since I’d done a lot of research on them and the artist prior to the exhibition opening for my FAC internship. I’m also fascinated by Japanese art in general, as someone who has studied Japanese art and is Japanese American. It’s really interesting to see how historic trends in Japanese art manifest themselves even in contemporary pieces.

What is your favorite work of art at the FAC?

It’s hard to say, but I’m a huge O’Keeffe fan, so the iris painting in the permanent collection is one of my (many) favorites.

What else do you like to do for fun in Colorado Springs?

I love to go for runs along Monument Creek and to window shop along Tejon street in the downtown area. Sitting on the CC quad with a book and some friends isn’t so bad either!
