Meet Our Sept Members of the Month: Denise and Norm Farrar

Why did you become a member of the Fine Arts Center?
Initially, I had a joint membership with my adult daughter, Rebecca. We had been attending many of the theater productions and decided to become season ticket holders. I believe it was suggested that we become members as a couple, to save a bit on our theater tickets.

When did your interest in the arts begin?
I think our interest in the arts began for both of us as college students, when individually, we traveled to Europe. Our interest heightened early in our marriage when we were stationed in Europe and started visiting many classic museums. We spent a long weekend on an art history tour that traveled to France and followed Van Gogh’s life in the area. That sparked an interest in the Impressionists.

What has been one of your favorite plays, classes or exhibits at the Fine Arts Center and why?
Throughout the years living in Colorado Springs we have attended many plays, and have never been disappointed in any performance. I always share that the Singing in The Rain musical was so memorable, because it really rained on stage! We took our young daughters to Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat years ago, and enjoyed the more recent one as well. I love the family Christmas productions! Most recently Mary Poppins was a favorite.

We participated in the “meet the artist” programs with Peter Max and Dale Chihuly. We believe that gave us an added appreciation for their works. Our daughter Jennifer participated in The Bemis art classes when she was in fifth grade. I still have her pieces of art on display! Rebecca took a beginning pottery class as an adult and loved it. The trip to Santa Fe, “In Georgia’s Footsteps,” was a fantastic way to delve into her life and art!

What is your favorite work of art at the FAC?
Denise’s favorite work of art at the FAC is Georgia O’Keeffe’s Black Iris. Norm’s favorites are the Chihuly chandeliers.

What else do you like to do for fun in Colorado Springs?
We moved to Colorado Springs in 1993, with the military and the entire family fell in love with the area. The outdoor activities are our favorites, hiking, biking, golfing and playing tennis. Norm is a regular of the Manitou Incline. We love to frequent the locally owned restaurants.
